A local historic preservation group is drawing swords, figuratively, against a cell tower’s proposed location on the Resaca Battlefield in Calhoun, GA, according to the Calhoun Times. The Dominion Tower Group wants to erect a 305-foot lattice structure on the site but is being opposed by Friends of Resaca Battlefield, Inc (FORB), saying it would have a negative visual impact on their hallowed ground. The battle was fought in 1864 as Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s troops began their “march to the sea” through Georgia following the sacking of Atlanta.

“[Thursday] we were made aware of a potential threat to the pristine nature of the park,” FORB Vice President Keith Beason said. “We are contacting all of our membership and attempting to rally support.”

The tower would be sited between the interstate and the road that runs along the park’s Camp Creek. Public input on the project will be accepted through Wednesday, April 5, the Times reported.

“This will be an isolated edifice and have a profound negative effect on the pristine nature of the visitor experience,” FORB said in a statement. “We suggest as many people as possible call the number provided and send an email.”
