Climbers Union Makes an Effort to Organize

A recent posting on social media sites dedicated to tower climbers indicated more organizational movement behind recent efforts by the Communications Workers of American (CWA) to attract tower workers. One group, calling themselves “the FM150” is looking to gather 150 “founding members” in the industry to join CWA and display a logo identifying themselves.

The posting by an unidentified source stated: “Currently, the Carriers and Turf Vendors at the top have all of the power in the industry. We, tower climbers and subcontractors, are at the bottom and face disproportionate risk, unfair wages and liability. Only a union can change this.

We deserve a voice in this industry.

We have a strong community.

We are joining together to build a powerful force.”

The would-be organizers said in 20 years, people will look back at the founding of the Tower Climbers Union/CWA as an important historical event. After the first 150, tower climbers will still be able to join the union, but “not at Founder status,” the announcement read.

Those who join the group will receive:

  • A Founding Member lapel pin with our logo
  • A Founder certificate signed by CWA President Chris Shelton
  • A Founding Member t-shirt
  • Invitations to Founding Member meetings to help plan the direction of the union

The first Founding Member meeting is planned for April 10, but details as to how or where the meeting would take place were not available.
