In an effort to improve broadband access for all state residents, Colorado Governor Jared Polis has signed several broadband bills into law. According to GovTech, the four separate bills work together to help support broadband capabilities across the state.

The first bill, HB 24-1036, allows broadband providers to receive a refund on state sales and use tax for property that is installed to bring broadband service to rural areas by building up the infrastructure.

HB 24-1234, is aimed at making sure that the High-Cost Support Mechanism will continue to be operated by the Public Utilities Commission. The PUC oversight helps to provide financial aid for broadband in rural areas thanks to funds administered and distributed by the Colorado Broadband Office (CBO).

A multi-unit building owner cannot deny access to a broadband provider seeking to install broadband infrastructure, mandates HB 24-1334.

And lastly, HB 24-1336, has expanded the ways in which the state can apply broadband funding. The more flexible interpretation will accommodate middle-mile infrastructure, fiber networks and high-cost areas funding. It will also allow additional funding for local governments and nonprofit agencies.

“We are grateful to the governor for signing these laws, the bill sponsors and the Broadband Deployment Board for their years of invaluable consultation and commitment to expanding broadband access for Coloradans,” stated Brian Martin, Program manager and CBO Broadband Deployment Board liaison.
