Community Board 14 (CB14) has unanimously reaffirmed its opposition to LinkNYC’s planned installation of multiple 5G towers throughout the Rockaway peninsula, according to The Wave. The vote took place during a full board meeting on March 11, continuing a years-long effort by the board to push back against the project.
Odette J. Wilkens, president and general counsel of Wired Broadband, Inc., gave a PowerPoint presentation to CB14’s Environmental Committee last month, warning of potential dangers associated with 5G towers. One slide showed a 5G tower installed in front of a building near a child’s bedroom, raising concerns over proximity to residential areas.
CB14 Environmental Committee Chair David Shelborne claimed that 5G towers “heat up above the heat of the sun,” posing safety risks. If towers overheat or fall, Shelborne said, they could be hazardous to residents and nearby structures. CB14 is encouraging members and community residents to write letters to local politicians urging them to block the installation of the towers.
