UPDATE A group of Connecticut residents operating under the moniker “The Woodbridge Newton Neighborhood Environmental Trust” (WNNET) is seeking a legal reversal of a cell tower decision. Verizon’s request to install a 100-foot cell tower in the community was approved by the Connecticut Siting Council with a 4-2 vote over a year ago. However, as The New Haven Register reports, the neighborhood group is challenging the approval citing potential threats to their property values and a blight on their bucolic view.
An earlier challenge from the WNNET was shot down by a New Britain Superior Court judge. That judge ended up dismissing the claim on the grounds that the WNNET failed to prove that the Siting Council had violated any rules when the initial request was approved.
“We have to appeal, because we will lose our family house and will be financially destroyed,” stated WNNET member Kiyoko Karwowski. “In our residential community, nobody would live next to a cell tower and we are going to [be forced to evacuate] our house. Please help. It will ruin everything,” she added. Karwowski, who lives the closest to the proposed Woodbridge North 2 Facility, has also filed an individual grievance.
The Woodbridge North 2 Facility was approved to address coverage gaps in the area, according to The New Haven Register. Cellco, doing business as Verizon Wireless, intends to construct a cell tower within a 50-ft by 50-ft fenced lot at a cost of $425,000. The 100-ft tower height was already lowered from the original plan of 140-ft as a concession to concerned neighbors.
