Costa Rica’s regulator, Sutel (Superintendencia de Telecomunicaciones), plans to hold a 5G auction on October 23, reported Developing Telecoms. The bands available include 700 MHz, 2.3 GHz, 3.5 GHz, 26 GHz, and 28 GHz available by the time the auction kicks off.

According to Sutel’s Director General of Quality of Service and Spectrum, Glenn Fallas, there are stipulations associated with some spectrum for sale, including:

  • 700 MHz licensees will be required to cover 60 percent of the specified 134 “priority districts” within the first 12 months. The remaining coverage (40 percent) must be deployed within 24 months.
  • The 2.3 GHz and 3.5 GHz permits must focus efforts on areas with “limited or no coverage.” The timeline is 20 percent coverage required after one year, 50 percent after two years, and 100 percent after three years of receiving the license.
  • Spectrum in the 26 GHz and 28 GHz bands will not have any coverage obligations.

Sutel expects to confirm the auction winners on December 19.
