DISH Network Issues Update on Ransomware Attack

DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH) has said in response to cyber attacks that impacted its network in February it is taking steps to recover by increasing its call center capacity and social media response capabilities to help customers. In a recent statement, the company said it is “making progress on the customer service front every day” and “it will take a little time before all of our systems are fully restored.”

Market analysts have said the hack impacted the Boost Mobile and DBS businesses that shut down services such as installations, disconnects, bill payments, and customer care for three weeks. New Street Research commented that, in their opinion, the issues have been resolved.

“We assume it had a bigger impact on Boost, because pre-paid customers may be automatically disconnected if they don’t pay their bills,” New Street’s Jonathan Chaplin said. “With customers unable to pay bills, the company unable to reinstate service, and customer care offline, affected subs will have signed up for service elsewhere.”

DISH has not offered any details on the attack, citing security reasons.

Mobile World Live reported a source from an anti-virus software company said a lack of detail from DISH about the attack makes it hard to interpret what happened. “It could mean that it impacted multiple systems and so far they’ve only been able to rebuild that one,” the source told Mobile World Live.
