After a legal action was settled between Verizon and Dewey Beach, DE almost a year ago, the Cape Gazette reports that numerous 5G cell phone poles are still anchored in the sand. Frustrated that the poles are still there, Mayor Bill Stevens said, “If we get into another summer with them out there, it’s just more egg on our face in terms of us having the ability to move forward … is there a reason why we can’t force them down right now?”
Verizon has communicated with consultant James Crane of CTC Technology & Energy regarding the delay. Forms have been submitted to relocate the poles, but corrections have kept the process from being finalized. According to the source, Crane was told that Verizon said it was unable to situate the poles in locations preferred by the town, but did not share any hard data to back up this stance.
To move forward, Verizon needs to fill in the section of the applications regarding FCC NEPA/NHPA environmental assessments. Verizon has asked the town to waive the ordinances that require this information deeming it to be proprietary.
“Let’s move this on, let’s see what we can do because they’re not in any hurry, obviously,” Mayor Stevens told the Gazette.
