Stating their mutual interest in constructing green cell towers, Telecom Egypt and Huawei have teamed up for a new project. As Zawya reports, the partners have announced plans to build their first environmentally friendly support structure. Rather than relying on a steel structure, their 59-foot cell tower will use specialized plastics.
Telecom Egypt Managing Director/CEO Adel Hamed spoke of his company’s commitment to green solutions that are both sustainable and address problems inherent in metal usage. A fiberglass tower would not suffer from corrosion, he noted, and will not overheat and require constant cooling. The camouflage fence surrounding the structure will also be constructed of durable polymers.
The agreement with Huawei will also incorporate the latest operating software designed to increase signal strength and reduce energy consumption. Huawei Egypt CEO Jim Liu expressed his company’s enthusiasm for the opportunity to partner with Telecom Egypt. He added that the use of solar energy panels will help reduce CO2 emissions associated with traditional cell tower systems. He also pointed out the reduction of power consumption that will be achieved by integrating Radio Access Network equipment, according to Zawya.
No timeframe for the project or cost estimates for its completion were provided.
