The FCC adopted a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking in April that seeks comment on proposed rules to make Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) more accessible to people who do not speak English or Spanish and to those with disabilities who cannot access messages displayed in a conventional format. The Commission proposes rules that would integrate WEA more seamlessly into people’s lives through increased flexibility in whether the attention signal and/or vibration is triggered.

The agency also proposes requiring wireless providers that participate in WEA satisfy performance measures and provide alerting stakeholders with greater transparency regarding WEA’s availability and performance.

The Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau notifies interested parties that comments on the proposed rules to PS Docket Nos. 15-94 and 15-91 are due on July 21, and replies on August 21. Federal Register publication triggered the due dates.
