Working as part of a three-man welding crew, Ramiro Covarrubias suffered a fatal fall from a cell tower last Monday. The Shelby Star notes that Covarrubias was employed by a subcontractor and was not an employee of Verizon. The subcontractor was not named, though the individual was identified as the owner of Covarrubias Contracting LLC out of Kissimmee, Florida, and was also a project manager for B&C Contracting. The actual cause of the fall is unknown at this time. The tower is reportedly owned by Crown Castle with Verizon as the primary tenant.
Captain Seth Treadway of the Shelby, NC Police Department said that they responded to the scene of the incident on East Dixon Boulevard near the Super 8 Motel but were unable to determine what caused the welder to fall. An incident report was submitted and the matter was turned over to OSHA for further investigation.Ā
In his report, Treadway was able to determine that Covarrubias was approximately 200-feet in the air when the accident occurred. “It was a long way,” he told the Star.
