Paris-based mobile network operator, Free, announced that it has become the first MNO in France to deploy 5G SA (Standalone) on its national network. Unlike 5G NSA (Non-Standalone) which relies on an existing 4G LTE core for certain functions, 5G SA has its own core network that enables full 5G capabilities such as lower latency, higher data rates, and improved network efficiency compared to NSA.

5G SA supports advanced features like network slicing that can be tailored for different use cases, and leverages 5G technology for massive IoT and ultra-reliable low-latency communications applications.

Free says that it currently has the largest 5G mobile network in France, with over 20,000 5G sites in service, including 6,950 3.5 GHz sites while the majority operates on 700 MHz. Its network is available in almost 10,500 municipalities and covers nearly 95 percent of the French population. With over 15 million mobile subscribers, Free is the third largest MNO in France, behind market leader Orange (NYSE: ORAN) and second-ranked SFR, according to Inside Towers Intelligence.

With 5G SA, Free is also the first telco in France to launch Voice over New Radio or VoNR, a new technology that supports voice communication over a 5G network. According to specification, VoNR is designed to enhance voice communication with faster connection times, lower latency, better voice quality and less battery drain.
