Free Mobile, a French wireless service provider, has deployed a private 5G network at Alcatel Submarine Networks’ (ASN’s) site in Calais, France. ASN, which is a subsidiary of Nokia France, designs, manufactures, installs and maintains submarine cables.
The network has 57 indoor and 2 outdoor 5G access points covering a total surface area of 538,000 square feet. That factory is now Europe’s largest 5G-connected manufacturing facility, according to Free Mobile.
Free Mobile deployed the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud solution, which offers industrial-grade private 5G network connectivity and edge-computing capabilities. As a result, the legacy wired networks can now be replaced and the Calais site is ready to develop an Industry 4.0 ecosystem.
An integrated software architecture comprising three platforms (design & industrial engineering, production, cost management & planning) can now be deployed, which will interconnect all of ASN’s operations. There is also a hardware layer with a range of connected devices, such as goggles, tablets, and sensors, which can collect data from the production workshops in real time.
