Globe Telecom Selects Nokia to Cut Network Power Use

Globe Telecom, based in Manila, Philippines, selected Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) AVA Energy Efficiency software, in a software-as-a-service delivery model, to help reduce network power consumption and associated energy costs. Nokia AVA for Energy SaaS, using artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, will enable Globe to shut down or idle equipment automatically during low usage periods. The company says the Nokia solution delivers these operational and cost benefits while maintaining network quality.

With a SaaS model, Globe subscribes to the service and uses it on an on-demand basis. This approach enables faster service delivery and energy savings. This model also eliminates large up front capital expenditure and avoids the need to perform on-site software maintenance and updates. During proof of concept, Globe realized an equivalent annual power savings of 3-6 percent using Nokia’s AVA Energy Efficiency software together with the power saving feature of the radio access network.

Nokia says that it has more than 50 completed or active energy saving projects with communications service providers around the world, as these CSPs increasingly look for ways to cut their energy costs and address environmental sustainability issues in their networks.

Yoly Crisanto, Chief Sustainability and Corporate Communications Officer of the Globe Group, comments, “Efficient energy consumption is a strategic imperative for our network decarbonization initiatives and net zero targets. Deploying this [Nokia] solution will help reduce power costs, with no impact to customer experience.”
