The wireless community got together, as it often does, at yet another golf outing yesterday in Williamsburg, VA but, make no mistake, this industry is more about making people whole than “holing out.” Time and again, we have all seen the enormous effort made by state wireless associations across the country to stage a links-related event and know it is no small job to plan, sell, market and execute, not just the golf but the feeding, festivities and frolic we’ve all come to expect. And to what end?
Almost all tournaments end the same. Some needy cause, or causes, gets a check. Yesterday the Virginia Wireless Association (VAWA) helped establish a Foundation for one of its executive members, Jason Los, who was gone too soon (see Inside Towers issue of June 10). VAWA not only set up the foundation in Jason’s name, but invited his bereaved family to participate, which they did, in all aspects of the outing. Michael Harvey, VAWA President, said the generosity of the attendees and sponsors made it a record-setting event which resulted in presenting the family fund with a check for $20,000. Memories of Jason included many involving his own tireless efforts in helping those in need such as University of Maryland School of Medicine Center for Infant and Child Loss, animal welfare, humanitarian relief and poverty alleviation causes. In short, the industry honored an individual in the way he honored others.
Although this particular story focuses on this particular state association, the efforts nationwide by our industry in creating money-making events for noble causes deserves a well deserved round of applause. And when you’re done clapping, reach for your corporate wallet to truly honor those who make the effort of helping alleviate the often unkind fates this world can dish out.
