Capital Telecom requested a conditional-use permit to build a 65-foot tower in Clarkdale, Arizona, and the town council unanimously approved the request at last week’s meeting. Approximately 50 people attended the meeting to learn if the tower would be built near the Foothills Terrace subdivision. Despite some resident opposition, the council explained that federal law requires approval of such projects after a company has proved there is a gap in coverage, they have done their due diligence on other sites, and chosen the most appropriate site. City officials hired two experts to determine whether there was a gap in coverage that would be filled with the proposed site, and both agreed with Capital Telecom’s findings. The tower will not be disguised as a tree, as residents and town officials didn’t like the one that was built in Cottonwood. One other wireless carrier will be able to co-locate on the structure, ten feet below Verizon’s equipment.
