GSMA has announced its 5G growth predictions. With the ongoing worldwide rollout of 5G connectivity, it is likely that 5G will account for 51 percent of mobile connections by 2029, according to GSMA. The figure is expected to rise to 56 percent by 2030. ET Telecom notes that the 2030 prediction would represent 5.5 billion connected parties.

Data collected by GSMA shows that as of January 2024, 261 operators in 101 countries were running commercial 5G services. An additional 90 operators in 64 different markets have indicated that they are also in the process of rolling out 5G services. GSMA noted that 47 of the 261 operators provided 5G standalone service with more deployments planned.

“The early success of 5G was driven by enhanced mobile broadband (EMBB) and EMBB-related network traffic requirements,” stated Peter Jarich, Head of GSMA Intelligence. “Yet, while consumer requirements will continue their trajectory,” he continued, “We’re now seeing use cases beyond that. Opportunities are now appearing in areas including API monetisation and 5G RedCap for enterprise IoT – all supported by 5G-Advanced and 5G SA networks. 5G SA brings home 5G’s early promise, particularly where slicing, low-latency and massive IoT capabilities tied to enterprise service needs can be met. 5G-Advanced will only extend that further.”

IoT applications and the expanding use of AI capabilities will further fuel the demand for global 5G connectivity, according to ET Telecom.
