Through a partnership and collaboration, GME Supply and Harken Industrial came up with the idea to use Harken’s experience with vertical boating winches to produce a one-of-a-kind vertical hitch-mounted capstan, designed specifically for lifting and rigging applications.

“For years we’ve been asked for a solution in the capstan category for more capacity and speed. We partnered with Harken to make that request come to life,” said John Lamond, VP of Sales from GME Supply. “Not only does this deliver on the initial request of weight and speed, it also delivers new safety features and designs that have never been utilized in the industry.”

The result is the Harken HighTailer 1,500-pound Capstan Hoist Winch, which is a field utility winch system designed for lifting and lowering materials in all applications using synthetic fiber rope. What differentiates the Harken HighTailer Capstan Hoist Winch is that it is mounted vertically and provides more speed and power than traditional capstan hoists of the same size. With the vertical mounting, the user does not have to stand behind the capstan during use.

The Capstan Hoist Winch has two settings, which allow users to customize the working load and lifting rate based on what they are lifting. In low mode, up to 650 pounds can be lifted at a rate of 43 feet/minute. High mode allows for more capacity, lifting up to 1,500 pounds at 18 feet/min, which is 20 percent faster and 500 pounds heavier than typical capstan hoist winches, according to GME Supply.

The HighTailer includes a pigtail line drive, foot switch, and a block for easy setup at the job site. The block shifts force closer to the hitch, improving strength and adding reliability. The block also removes the need for a swivel mount found on most other capstans.

The rope lock system is internal, capped, and spring-loaded, which keeps the rope from slipping off the end of the drum and allows the rope lock to wrap 360 degrees around the capstan. The capstan hoist winch is compatible with a range of synthetic fiber rope sizes – from 1/2 to 5/8-inch lifting rope.

The compact size of the capstan hoist winch makes it easier to transport. The winch with the bracket weighs in at only 56 pounds and the hitch mount weighs 16 pounds. The unit is designed to attach to the included hitch mount horizontally. For generator options, users may opt for the Generac GP Series 6500E Portable Generator or Generac GP Series 6500 Cosense Portable Generator. The recommended output is 4,000 Watts or higher.
