Atlanta is embarking on a new smart city project, repurposing 22 miles of abandoned railways and reimagining it to include connected public spaces, multi-use trails, and a light rail transit system. IoT World reported that the Atlanta BeltLine project will utilize Honeywell’s City Suite Software.

“The BeltLine itself is a testing ground for innovation. It’s a place where we can use technology to solve problems facing our communities that could be scaled city-wide and as a case study for cities across the country,” said Clyde Higgs, Atlanta BeltLine’s CEO.

Honeywell’s software solution is an AI-enabled platform that will help the city improve services, including emergency services, security, and utilities, by aggregating data. Atlanta’s project marks Honeywell’s platform’s first deployment in the U.S.

IoT World reported that Atlanta BeltLine is one of the largest urban redevelopment programs in the country, connecting 45 in-town neighborhoods through its rail transit system. Atlanta BeltLine also offers free public WiFi, autonomous grocery stores, and smart trash cans, with more services in development. The project aims to close the digital divide and create more connected communities.

“The Atlanta BeltLine uses public infrastructure as a vehicle for catalyzing economic growth and development,” added Higgs. “This digital inclusion and smart cities initiative will play a major role in defining our legacy and impact as an organization as we seek to leverage our telecommunication infrastructure to open up new economic opportunities to residents, students, business owners, seniors, and the community at large.”
