It Might Be “No Dice” For Verizon in Lucky Nugget

Residents of the Lucky Nugget neighborhood near South Fork Reservoir in Nevada are opposing Verizon Wireless’s (NYSE: VZ) plan to construct a 160-foot cell tower in their rural community, according to the Elko Free Press. The controversy has sparked appeals, citing concerns over aesthetics, property values, and the rural quality of life.

Verizon applied for a special-use permit to build the tower, meeting all Elko County requirements. The proposed location was chosen based on studies to fill coverage gaps, and the landowner approved the plan. Residents have expressed concern about the visual impact of a 160-foot tower in a rural neighborhood, arguing that the tower would lower property values and would disrupt the peace and beauty of the area.

The Lucky Nugget Property Owners Association has officially opposed the current location. While residents emphasize their support for cell towers and the benefits of improved connectivity, they contend that a 160-foot tower in such close proximity to homes is unnecessary, given the abundance of open land in the surrounding area. The Elko County Planning Commission will consider the appeal on January 16.
