Dan Barton, President at Alive Telecom, a global supplier of communications equipment, systems and services, presented “5 Ways to Ensure Public-Safety Communications Network Resiliency” recently at IWCE Expo.

The session covered macro public safety network resilience and why it is of paramount importance to ensure communications by maintaining continuous operation, mitigating downtime, and the successful deployment of future technologies. This session offered best practices across five pragmatic initiatives, including:

1. Network Design and the Next Generation of Designers – Envisioning the Public-Safety Macro Network “Version “3.0” including what it will need to accomplish, how it should be deployed, who will be the next wave of stakeholders to orchestrate it, and what it means for FirstNet.

2. National Antenna Database – Creation of a national database of public safety network sites that includes antenna specifications and installation dates to facilitate proactive network management and asset replacement.

3. Critical Infrastructure Sparing – Adoption of local and/or regional sparing of commonly-used antennas akin to the practice employed by commercial airlines to minimize network downtime.

4. Scheduled Replacement Strategies – Development and enforcement of new codes to identify and proactively replace critical communications infrastructure before failure by leveraging AI predicative analysis modeling.

5. Macro and Indoor Network Symbiosis –
Investigate the reliance of indoor public-safety communications networks on the public-safety macro network and identify reasonable strategy.
