Job Description
We seek to hire a Civil CAD Technician to join our Wireless Communications division in our Richmond, Vienna, or Virginia Beach, VA office. This position will be responsible for assisting Civil engineers and Civil EI/EIT’s in the production of construction drawings. Typical responsibilities include drafting of marked-up plans, sections, details, and notes produced by the project Civil engineer or Civil EI/EIT; three-dimensional modeling of the site, roadways, and utilities; development of schematic-level layout and grading plans with minimal or modest direction from the Civil engineer; adherence to company and department standards; and coordination with technicians and professionals from other disciplines within the design team. Candidate will work in stand-alone and multi-discipline design teams supervised by senior engineers and project managers on projects of small to large scope.
General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
• Performing all aspects of Civil modeling and/or drafting on projects, or portions of projects, as directed by a senior or lead project engineer. Projects may include single-discipline (Civil-only) or multi-discipline projects for both new and existing construction. Production of sketches may be required for inclusion in written reports.
• Discussing with the lead Civil engineer and developing resolution for all instances of conflict between a Civil utility and the work of another discipline discovered during the drafting and/or modeling process
• Adhering to company and department standards for both CAD and BIM projects
• Communicating and coordinating with technicians and professionals from other disciplines during the development of models, plans, sections, and details. Results of such communication and coordination shall be shared with the lead Civil engineer.
• Assisting with the review of shop drawing submittals for general conformance with the contract drawings
• Complying with quality control policies and procedures
• Serving as a mentor to entry-level Civil EI/EIT’s who are unfamiliar with the production of contract drawings
Project responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
• Drafting of marked-up plans, partial plans, sections, details, and notes provided by the Civil engineer or Civil EI/EIT
• Completing sections and details produced to a schematic-level of completion by the Civil engineer or Civil EI/EIT
• Producing design development-level site layout, roadway layout, and grading plans for projects of low to moderate complexity
• Developing an accurate, three-dimensional model of the site with the necessary level of detail using the required Building Information Modeling (BIM) software package on projects that require BIM
• Participate in multi-discipline BIM coordination efforts on projects that require BIM
• Assist Senior CAD Technicians with tasks as assigned
• Adhere to project budget and schedule
Education
• Have earned a high school diploma, or equivalent, and completed coursework in AutoCAD, Microstation, and/or BIM software packages from a technical or vocational school; or
• An Associate’s Degree in a field of study related to drafting and design; or
• A Certificate in a field of study related to drafting and design; or
• A four-year undergraduate degree in a field of study related to drafting and design
Licenses, Certifications, and Accreditations
• Applicable Autodesk certifications are desirable
• USGBC LEED AP credentials (LEED AP or LEED Green Associate) are desirable
• Active membership in drafting or modeling-related organizations (local or web-based) is desirable
• Certificate of Management for Building Information Modeling (CM-BIM) is desirable
Software Skills
A Civil CAD Technician should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, and information management.
Working familiarity with design and production software to a point of being able to utilize the software in the development of project documents and interact with other project team members in their use of the software is highly desirable.
Career Experience
A Civil CAD Technician must meet all of the educational requirements for the position and have some office experience as a CAD or BIM technician with demonstrable proficiency in the use of AutoCAD, REVIT, and/or Bentley BIM software packages.
Previous experience with wireless communications projects will be given additional consideration for Civil CAD Technicians assigned to our Wireless Communications division.
