Consider it a permanent Halloween costume but better. A 160-foot cell tower is under construction and about to dominate the sky along Grandview Boulevard in Madison, MS, a city of just over 25,000, and it’s getting a warm reception.
“We didn’t want a traditional cell phone tower in the middle of Grandview with the park,” Madison Director of Environment and Design Alan Hoops told WLBT/WDBD, the Raycom Media TV combo in nearby Jackson, MS. “The mayor, we all wanted it to fit in and it does. It’s going to be nice, colors and the architectural style is all going to look good together.”
Strategic Sites is building the 80-ton steel tower. Its skeleton will be covered with a foam skin that permits cell signals to pass through, and it will be topped with a dome and column so it looks like a bell tower and blends in with the architecture in the neighborhood. Work should be completed in a month.
“I love it,” Joe Norton said. “It looks a lot better than a regular cell phone tower. It gets people’s attention more.”
