Maine Broadband: Help Wanted

A recently published report commissioned by the Maine Connectivity Authority shows that the state is making headway with its broadband development plans. However, as Maine Public reports, progress has been slowed due to a lack of available workers. The study determined that the state will need to boost its workforce by approximately 3,240 workers in order to stay on pace with its current broadband projects.

MCA Workforce Development Manager, Kwame Yeboah, noted that this is an excellent job opportunity for those who may be struggling to find work. He said that his agency has actively sought personnel who are retirees, immigrants, former inmates, and those on a recovery journey who are looking for a fresh start. There are training courses available at a growing number of locations in Maine, and plans to develop further educational options for those interested in working in the broadband industry.

“The idea is to go to them, try to work with the agencies that are working with them and find creative ways of engaging them in a field like this,” said Yeboah, “Because the pay is pretty good, benefits are pretty good, and demand is going to soar in the next couple of years. I mean it’s starting right now.”Ā
