An unnamed man created quite a stir when he decided to climb a cell tower in downtown Tulsa, OK. Local residents told KOKI-TV that the man was a familiar person who was frequently spotted around town. Choosing to ascend the cell tower, however, was apparently a shock to all.
“Known him for about seven years and he’s like a big brother to me,” stated Monica Harlan, who identified herself as a friend of the climber. “I haven’t seen him in about a month and I come to work and run into this. He’s never done anything like this before, never.”
The Tulsa Fire Department was summoned to the cell tower site near I-244 and Sheridan Road and attempted to convince the man to climb back down.
Spokesperson Andy Little said that they spent hours talking to the individual, trying to determine why he had gone up the cell tower in the first place and asking what would persuade him to return to the ground. Little added that the man was given a harness to allow the fire department to lift him down if he wanted to go that route instead.
Speculating that the man appeared to need time to think, Little commented that, “He told them that he was going to be up there for 30 minutes and then he was going to come down.” The man did eventually make his own way back down the cell tower, KOKI-TV reported, where he was met by an ambulance and transported to a nearby medical facility. His reason for climbing the tower remains unknown.
