Mavenir is virtualizing the RANs of two carriers that are each experiencing their own evolutions. Virgin Media, for one, is continuing its merger with O2 in the United Kingdom and Paradise Mobile is establishing a brand new carrier in Bermuda.

At the beginning of this month, Virgin Media O2 announced the complete migration of O2 mobile customers to a Mavenir virtualized IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) solution offering voice over LTE (VoLTE) and voice over WiFi (VoWiFi). The move will lower costs and make way for new services and increase flexibility, according to Mavenir.

Jorge Ribeiro, Virgin Media O2 Director of Service Platform Strategy & Engineering, said becoming cloud native will give the network flexibility, agility, and increased resilience as well as a “runway for future services.” Additionally, the cloud-native software features a self-automating network and provides capacity for additional subscribers in the future.

This week, Mavenir announced that it will be providing cloud-native 4G and 5G RAN for its new Bermuda-based operation, Paradise Mobile. The network is being built from the ground up with containerized, open, interoperable components and O-RAN based radios. The complete end-to-end network will include a core complete with IMS, voice, converged packet core and messaging, along with an Open Virtualized RAN and OpenBeam radios.
