Virgin Media O2 selected Mavenir as vendor and prime integrator for its Open virtualized Radio Access Network (Open vRAN) solution last week. Virgin Media O2 will work with Mavenir to roll out a scalable Open vRAN solution as part of its network evolution plans and adopt a more flexible and cloud-native architecture across the U.K.

“Through digitizing our networks, we’re seamlessly integrating our infrastructure to get more value from our existing assets,” said Virgin Media O2 CTO Jeanie York. “Extending our collaboration with Mavenir to the RAN for the first time will help us establish a future-proof Open vRAN architecture, unlocking the benefits of a multi-vendor open interface while allowing us to rapidly benefit from an end-to-end network solution.”

In February, Mavenir was chosen by Deutsche Telekom to provide the Open RAN across its European footprint. Mavenir will be delivering its OpenBeam massive MIMO radios as well as 3rd party O-RAN based Radio Units for open Fronthaul. In addition, Mavenir will also act as end-to-end system integrator for that deployment.

On this side of the pond, Mavenir’s Open vRAN software can be found supporting greater than 40,000 radios across the DISH Wireless’ 5G cloud-native Open RAN network.
