The Meridian, MS City Council approved the construction of a 250-foot cell tower last week only to have it vetoed by Mayor Percy Bland, according to WTOK-TV.

“After listening to the concerns of Meridian’s residents and small business owners at the last City Council Meeting concerning the Southern Linc Tower, I have vetoed the City Council’s Order approving the tower construction,” the Mayor said in a prepared statement, offering no further explanation. Many local residents, however spoke out against the tower for the familiar reasons of lowered property values, aesthetic impact and radiation concerns. The veto can be overturned with four votes, Councilwoman Kim Houston told WTOK-TV.

“That particular item will come back to the city council. We can uphold the veto or it can be overturned. It’s just a matter of votes,” Houston said.  But she wanted to hear more about the Mayor’s reasons before making a decision.

“Once we hear why the mayor decided to veto it, if it is within the rules of the law, then we will uphold that. But if it’s not according to the law then we will probably have to vote the same way we did originally,” Houston told WTOK-TV.
