Mobile Operators Renew Push for Government Support on 5G Rollout

Mobile UK, representing major networks like EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three, has released a report urging the government to support mobile infrastructure as part of its broader economic growth agenda. The report, by Assembly Research, argues that every £1 ($1.32) invested in mobile networks yields £5 ($6.60) in economic returns.

Despite the government’s stated goal of nationwide 5G coverage by 2030, mobile operators say recent legislation and budget plans have largely sidelined their needs. They warn that potential cuts to the $1.3B Shared Rural Network program could stall 4G expansion in rural areas.

Key industry recommendations include overhauling planning rules, reducing license fees, offering tax breaks on new infrastructure, accelerating the PSTI Act, and addressing mobile coverage “not-spots.”

Mobile UK says policy incentives that have worked for fixed broadband must now extend to mobile if the UK is to remain globally competitive.
