With the world transitioning to 5G, the NATO Allied Command Transformation and the Latvian Ministry of Defense led the “2023 Next Generation Communication Networks Technology Event” to demonstrate the use of technologies that can be used within the Alliance in Riga, Latvia at the end of last month.
NATO is also developing new capabilities in other advanced communication technologies, such as LEO satellites, which will influence global defense and security. Demonstrations showcased approaches to improve command and control capabilities including the use of virtual reality, secure post-quantum encryption, sensor fusion for situational awareness.
One of the experiments conducted during the event focused on telehealth. The specific experiment aimed to explore the application of 5G networks to enable telehealth on the field in military settings and to compare different telehealth equipment. Two NATO Nations, Germany and Czech Republic, contributed to this experiment.
“As a discipline, Telehealth is designed to improve access to healthcare, particularly in situations where in-person visits may be challenging, and it can be especially valuable for patients in remote or restricted areas,” according to the NATO report.
