New Illinois Law Expands Broadband Access via Electric Co-Ops

The state of Illinois announced a new law that gives electric cooperatives greater flexibility to deploy broadband infrastructure using existing electric easements and road rights-of-way, if they’ve received state or federal broadband funding.

Signed by Gov. JB Pritzker on August 15, the Electrical Service Broadband Deployment and Access Law aims to improve internet access in underserved areas. The Illinois Farm Bureau (IFB), which monitored the bill, did not oppose it due to added landowner protections, including limits on who can use the law and requirements for notification and compensation.

“Landowners in grant areas should understand how the process works,” said Bill Bodine, IFB’s director of business and regulatory affairs. “We’re here to help minimize potential impacts.”
