As the cloud sector gains prominence in the U.K., British regulator Ofcom is probing into Amazon, Microsoft, and Google’s services, reported Mobile World Live. The regulator wants to know if “digital communications markets are working well for people and businesses in the U.K.”

Ofcom will launch a survey in the coming weeks to determine how the three largest providers (or “hyperscalers”) are perceived by those consuming TV, radio, and audio content. According to Mobile World Live, the trio holds 81 percent of the cloud market share in the U.K., worth over $16.5 billion.

One survey priority is to determine “the strength of competition in cloud services” concerning the top three providers, stated Ofcom. It will also consider any market features which might limit innovation and growth in the sector, creating a barrier to entry for other providers.

The survey will probe into the use of WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Zoom to understand “whether any limitations on their ability to interact with each other raises potential concerns.” The survey results could impact governmental action, including policy changes and competition enforcement.
