ADIF-AV, an agency charged by the Spanish government with managing Spain’s high speed rail network, has announced an agreement with Nokia and Cellnex Telecom. As Data Center Dynamics reports, the $22.2 million award will task the two providers with installing 5G connectivity along its extensive railway network. The two will have 62 months to connect, digitalize, and automate all ten of ADIF’s rail logistics centers in Spain.
Cellnex has suggested a solution that will combine the resources of two independent radio networks. In its model, public 5G networks will work hand in hand with private 5G radio networks supported by ADIF. The terminal area will deploy coverage in the 2,300 MHz band. Umbrella coverage throughout the terminal area will operate in the 700 MHz band, with additional coverage in the 3,500 MHz band in high-traffic density areas, according to Cellnex.
The ten locations include Vicálvaro and Villaverde (Madrid); Zaragoza Plaza; Barcelona: Can Tunis and Barcelona La Llagosta; Valencia Fuente San Luis; Sevilla Majarabique; Vitoria Júndiz; Bilbao; and Valladolid. After installing these locations with 5G, there are plans to continue the upgrade with a range of IoT capabilities. The boost in automation is expected to improve efficiency, and reduce operating costs for ADIF.
