Nokia is increasing its presence in India. The OEM established a 6G Lab at its Global R&D center in Bangalore. The project aims to develop fundamental technologies and use cases for 6G technology.

The Lab includes a setup to research ‘Network as a Sensor’ technology that enables the network to sense objects, people and movement without the need for on-board sensors. In the 6G era, ’Network as a Sensor’ has been identified as a key enabling technology that supports the vision of bringing the digital and physical worlds together. Sensing will be fully integrated into the wireless network and operate simultaneously with communication services.

Additionally, Nokia’s factory in Chennai, India, which manufactures infrastructure equipment for 4G and 5G networks, has surpassed a total of seven million telecom units. The factory makes 5G New Radio, 5G MIMO, 4G/LTE radios and fiber broadband equipment and exports an estimated 50 percent of the production globally.

Nokia says it has been a part of India’s progress in technology and connectivity, beginning 27 years ago. It has 16,800 employees in 26 project offices in Gurgaon, Noida, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, with R&D centers in Bangalore and Chennai.

The OEM completed its first ever GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) call in India in 1995 on a Nokia phone over a Nokia network. It deployed 3G service in 2011, 4G LTE technology in 2012, and introduced 5G to India in 2022.

“Our journey has witnessed several remarkable milestones,” Nishant Batra, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer of Nokia, said. “We are a strong supplier and service provider to the leading public and private operators, large enterprises, and utility companies.”
