Nokia (NYSE: NOK) announced it was selected by Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW), the nation’s largest three-service municipal utility, according to Inside Towers Intelligence, to implement a comprehensive private 5G wireless network. This initiative is designed to advance MLGW’s multi-year grid modernization strategy throughout Memphis and Shelby County, TN. The deployment of a private 5G wireless network is expected to enhance power distribution to MLGW’s 420,000 customers, reduce the likelihood and impact of unplanned outages, and enable more efficient restoration of service to the community.
Nokia’s private 5G network uses its AirScale radio access equipment and 5G Core Enterprise Solution. The MLGW contract includes microwave backhaul from towers that Nokia is managing, and NetGuard cybersecurity for threat detection and privileged access management.
Nokia says its network solution will integrate and enhance communication across all three of MLGW’s utility services, boosting connectivity, resilience, and efficiency. The secure, scalable network will support real-time automation, automated meter reading, grid monitoring, fault detection, and remote operations.
The company assures MLGW of seamless interoperability with both existing infrastructure and modern IoT devices, such as sensors and smart meters, maintaining continuity and expanding capabilities.
“The 5G Network Deployment is a foundational aspect of MLGW’s Grid Modernization Initiative,” comments Doug McGowen, President and CEO, MLGW. “We will be able to meet the requirements for a modern electric grid. We will have fast and reliable communication for grid devices [and] increased reliability during storms or cyber events that will help us restore power even faster after outages. This enables more automation and smart control operations and supports future technology like electric vehicles and battery storage.”
