In Whitefield, New Hampshire, new public-private partnerships will allow for improve cell phone service in the upper North Country. U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen announced the beginning of the North Country Cell Service Initiative, which will use existing cell tower to deploy WiFi Extenders to create carrier neutral 4G LTE voice, data services, and high-capacity broadband. Shaheen and Governor Maggie Hassan announced a $240,000 grant to the Coos Economic Development Council to build a new cell tower last September. That step evolved into a discussion about expanding telecommunications services in the area, and the newest effort will increase the cell sites in the area from one to four, serving the communities of Dummer, Milan, Stark, Errol, Dixville, Clarksville, Stewartstown and Pittsburg, and with the potential to add an additional 10 sites throughout Coos County. Hassan, in a statement released by her office, said that “A modern, strong telecommunications infrastructure is critical to the economic prosperity of our businesses, to the safety of our people and to the high quality of life that we are known for in the Granite State. Through this innovative public-private partnership, we are providing a strategic connection that will extend service in unserved and underserved areas of Coos County, encouraging business development and enhancing emergency communications.” (Union Leader)
