Ocean City Council Approves “Strict” Tower Regulations

Last Monday, the Ocean City (MD) City Council unanimously approved new utility and installation agreements and ordinances around wireless infrastructure. OC Today reported that “strict regulations” have been set regarding all towers erected in city rights of way, easements, or properties. According to City Manager Terry McGean, the new regulations will “enhance” the regulatory process if towers are eventually allowed in neighborhoods where they’re currently being blocked.

The decision comes on the heels of a proposed Crown Castle project, including three 30-foot 5G towers located where residents say they don’t fit in with the image. The telecom’s recent applications were denied, causing company officials to file federal lawsuits.

Montego Bay, where Crown Castle plans to erect the towers, is at the forefront of the debate. The neighborhood, with 1,500 residents, currently has all utilities located underground with no aboveground structures higher than a few feet.

Many Montego Bay residents don’t see eye to eye with Crown Castle over the need for the towers. The telecom claims towers are necessary to fix service issues, while many residents disagree.

During the City Council meeting, resident Betty Bellar referenced a petition opposing the towers, signed by 1,030 people living in Montego Bay. “Our community does not want this in there, and I hope that you will keep fighting for us,” she said.
