In an area that is currently without either cell towers or tall pine trees, a new monopine cell tower could represent the first appearance for both. Tower Ventures is currently in discussions with Virginia Beach, VA to erect a 134-ft camouflage tower behind the Food Lion off the Lynnhaven Parkway. An earlier flagpole design cell tower once served the region but has been out of commission since 2017. A new cell tower is needed to handle the demands of 5G delivery, noted The Virginian-Pilot.
City Planner Hoa Dao stated that he felt that a monopine design would be out of step with its surroundings. “The tower location is in a very populated area and in an area where large, tall pine trees are not abundant,” Dao explained.
Although the Virginia Beach city planning staff decided to recommend approving the Tower Ventures request, according to The Virginian-Pilot, they did heed Dao’s suggestion, modifying their written approval. “Since there are no trees or tall buildings in the vicinity of the lease area of the tower,” reads the document, “In Staff’s view the monopine tower may be out of character with the surrounding area.”
