An allocation of U.S. Treasury monies made available through the American Rescue Plan Act’s Capital Projects Fund will soon see extra monetary resources placed in Oklahoma’s coffers. As KFOR-TV reports, the Oklahoma Broadband Office (OBO) expects to receive an additional $167.7 million in federal grants for broadband expansion.

“We will invest these funds in areas of the state where broadband infrastructure expansion has historically been cost prohibitive due to low population density and geographic constraints,” said OBO Executive Director Mike Sanders. “In other words, rural Oklahoma will be the biggest beneficiary.”

According to the most recent data, there are still more than 728,000 Oklahoma residents whose digital connectivity is minimal, or completely lacking. Oklahoma is working to bring access to reliable high-speed internet service to those people living in rural areas of the state. The new funding will help foster programs that will make connectivity affordable for all residents.
