Orange (NYSE: ORAN) recently announced it will use a private 5G network in preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympics, where the telecom is the sole official connectivity provider.
Mobile World Live reported that Orange is setting up a standalone private 5G network that broadcasters can access during the games, which will run from July 26 to August 11. This network will be separate from the public one used by spectators.
The private network will provide coverage in the Stade de France, Arena Bercy, and over a 3.5-mile stretch of the Seine. Mobile World Live reported that the operator’s contract involves more than 120 venues, including areas in Paris, transport hubs, and athlete training grounds. According to Orange, the private network will provide “high, stable upload speeds” combined with guaranteed ultra-low latency and “superior security intrinsic to the technology.”
In collaboration with Orange, Samsung is preparing for the games by installing more than 200 Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones on 85 “vessels” designed to transport over 10 thousand athletes in the event’s opening ceremony. As Samsung revealed, these smartphones will capture HDR footage of the opening ceremony, which will then be streamed over Orange’s private 5G network.
