Peer Group Pressures Pai to Climb a Tower

Not all of yesterday’s FCC oversight hearing was contentious. Some members of the House Communications Subcommittee ribbed FCC Chairman Ajit Pai about Commissioner Brendan Carr’s tower climb. Readers may recall Carr recently scaled a 50-foot training tower at Sabre Industries in Sioux Falls, SD.

Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) said he was once a leader in the Navy. Noting that Pai is a leader, he said to Pai: “You have a member who climbed a cell tower. Don’t you think you should, too?”

After a prolonged sigh, Pai admitted he was “unprepared” for the “curveball.” Pai said: “Although Carr is younger and more nimble, I commit to climbing a small cell, maybe a 10-foot tower in Houston” when that 5G system is ready. Verizon announced this week it will place such a system there this year.
