Rogers Communications (NYSE: RCI) announced it is collaborating with CableLabs to bring advanced network technology to Canadians. Located in Calgary, Alberta, at Rogers Barlow campus, CableLabs will develop its expertise in Canada through ‘CableLabs North.’
CableLabs, headquartered in Louisville, CO, is a non-profit innovation and research lab dedicated to advancing the cable industry. CableLabs has developed technology to help cable operators including Comcast, Charter, Cox, J:Com and Vodafone to deploy hybrid fiber-coax networks that deliver high-speed internet connections with greater reliability to meet consumers’ evolving expectations.
CableLabs North is intended to bring together global industry partners and Rogers’ technologists to collaborate on network technology solutions for Canadians. The goal is that the teams will develop new innovative applications and provide customers seamless connections in and out of the home or workplace, Rogers said in a release.
CableLabs North will develop technology that includes the ability to deliver 5G using cable network infrastructure to bring customers faster speeds and more capacity. Rogers indicated that new developments also will focus on its rollout of 10G, the future of cable internet that will bring multi-gigabit speeds up to 10 times faster than today with enhanced reliability and ultra-low latency.
“As the largest operator of coast-to-coast wireless and wireline networks in Canada, we are proud to invest in research and bring the next frontier of networks to Canadians,” said Ron McKenzie, Rogers Chief Technology and Information Officer. “CableLabs North will be on the forefront of innovation, bringing together the best and brightest minds from around the world to collaborate on the future of network technology and deliver a more seamless experience to Canadians.”
“CableLabs is excited to work closely with Rogers to make ‘CableLabs North’ a reality. The value of this deep collaboration cannot be overstated as it will offer an opportunity to engage with innovators at Rogers on initiatives that will transform our industry,” said Mark Bridges, CableLabs CTO.
Last year, Rogers closed its merger with Shaw Communications, Inside Towers reported. The merger brought together Canada’s largest 5G network with a national coast-to-coast wireline company with fiber-powered cable internet available to over 60 percent of Canadian households.
