Canada’s Rogers Communications completed tests showing more than double the fastest published internet speeds of any major telecoms provider in the country. Capacity reported that the test was conducted on Rogers’ fiber network, both in the lab and via customer trials.
The trial results showed the potential download and upload speeds of up to 8 Gbps. According to Rogers president and chief operating officer of home and business, Robert Dépatie, customers will be able to explore streaming TV, online game play, videoconferencing, immersive virtual reality, and more like never before.
“Fiber-powered networks are the foundation of building world-class connectivity solutions for our customers, and it is critical that the network technology delivers on the reliability and speed our customers need,” he added.
Rogers has invested nearly $200 million to roll out fiber internet service, reported Capacity. The Rogers Ignite Internet service, offering download and upload speeds of up to 8 Gbps, is slated for availability to customers across Ontario, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland by this coming summer.
Rogers also launched the first commercial 5G standalone (SA) network in Canada in March as Inside Towers reported. In partnership with Ericsson, the 5G SA network was built using cloud-native technologies, enabling more advanced wireless capabilities such as ultra-low latency, network slicing, and mobile edge computing, expanding Rogers’ 5G footprint across the country.
