The Columbus County Commissioners in North Carolina approved another $190,000 to improve the new $1.3 million public safety radio system. The additional funds were needed to address expenses that were not foreseen during the original scope of the project. A few of the existing towers will not be structurally sound if additional equipment is added. A Time Warner-owned tower in Whiteville was so unsound that crews weren’t allowed on it to remove existing equipment. The company is now replacing the tower and it should be complete later this month. The $190,000 will buy and install the equipment impacted by the failing or unsound towers. The Commissioners believe these improvements are essential for the county’s safety, and plan to see this project through.
