The steeple of First Church in Sandwich, MA will soon house a Verizon antenna system, according to the Cape Cod Times. Church official said the deployment will improve service in the area but keep a “character-defining structure” of the village intact. The church was featured on an Elvis Presley album cover for “How Great Thou Art,” released in 1967.
The installation is expected to be completed in late April although church officers have stipulated the steeple’s appearance will not change and will reside entirely inside the structure. Much of the existing wooden covering is being replaced with a fiberglass sheeting conducive to better reception. Yankee Steeplejack based in Harvard, MA is contracted to do the construction.
“We were very careful to make sure the historic character and integrity of the church was not affected in any way,” a church official told the Cape Cod Times.
A “Cape Cod shed” with wooden shingle siding next to the church’s parking lot will serve as the site’s utility shelter. The money being paid by Verizon will go toward the church’s operating expenses.
Two years ago, according to the Cape Cod Times, church officials estimated the payment could be $4,000 a month.
