Product Advisory

3M’s Fall Protection Department issued a product advisory yesterday on selected harnesses issued between May and November 2021. The company stressed this is not a recall and 3M™ DBI-SALA® Delta™ and 3M™ Protecta® Harnesses “remain safe to use.” The company said during internal testing, it was discovered that some models of these harnesses did not consistently meet the required performance of ANSI Z359.11-14 clause 4.3.4 head first dorsal dynamic drop at the required 3,600 lbs. (16 kN) impact force.

“The forces during this internal dynamic drop testing were greater than 3,200 lbs. (14.2 kN). Personal energy absorbing devices are designed so that the user does not experience impact forces greater than 1,800 lbs. (8 kN),” the company said in a statement. “There have been no reports of injuries, accidents, or complaints associated with this issue. Since detecting this issue, 3M Fall Protection has modified the design to ensure that all harnesses produced after December 1, 2021 will consistently meet the stated ANSI certification as identified on the label.”

3M urges end-users to inspect the product label (see image above) to confirm that it is one of the affected part numbers listed in Appendices 1 & 2 and was manufactured in the affected time range: May-November 2021. Once a user has confirmed the part number and affected date, contact the 3M Fall Protection Customer Service Team for additional information about how to return the product to 3M.

The company says returned product(s) must pass a pre-use inspection. If it fails inspection, the company will dispose of the product and contact the buyer.
