Alabama’s Shelby County administrators are reporting that first responders now have a new communications tool aimed at enhancing emergency response and public safety. The newly installed radio tower in Alabaster ensures faster and more reliable communication between police, fire, and EMS personnel, particularly in areas with weak coverage, reports WBRC-TV

Officials said this radio tower will function even if cell service is down, a critical advantage, they feel, during natural disasters or large-scale emergencies. The county now owns eight radio towers and said it is actively expanding its emergency radio system by adding two more towers in the near future.

“Our goal with the radio system in the Shelby County commission’s goal is always to provide the best coverage we can for all of our first responders. We want to make sure that our first responders and our citizens are well taken care of,” County Executive Director Alan Campbell told WBRC-TV.

Previous coverage gaps inside Thompson High School made it difficult for first responders to communicate, Campbell said. The new tower is designed to provide better indoor and area-wide coverage, improving response times and coordination.
