Tulare County in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Southern California is going to upgrade and expand the coverage of its public safety radio system, adding seven new towers, according to the Sun-Gazette. The Tulare County Board of Supervisors awarded the $3.1 million contract for a radio tower design and construction project to Tashjian Towers Corporation, an engineering, design and manufacturing company based in Fowler, CA.
The cost of this project will be covered through funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, which was passed in 2021 to fund infrastructure improvements in water, sewer and broadband internet access. To use the funds, the project must be completed by 2026.
The network currently has 18 tower locations throughout the county. Along with filling in coverage gaps, the new towers will support high speed county intranet communications and future capabilities, including simulcast, the Sun-Gazette reports. Heights of the new towers will vary from 100 feet to 140 feet.
