An Arizona retirement community has spoken out against plans to erect a 65-foot cell tower in their midst. Residents in the Sunbird Golf Resort have petitioned against the proposed tower, reports AZ Family, claiming that it will set a bad precedent for friends and neighbors. The petition states that building a cell tower in their residential community will open the door to construction in other residential neighborhoods.
Pointing to a report published in Realtor.com, opponents cite this source as evidence that home buyers can be deterred by the obvious presence of a cell tower.
On the other side of the argument are those who favor the safety aspects of having a cell tower nearby. As a 55+ community, there are those in Sunbird who say that the public’s ability to summon emergency assistance should be given the most weighty consideration.
In its official response, the City of Chandler says it has no authority to stop Atlas Tower from moving forward with construction plans. “The City of Chandler cannot prohibit cell phone towers within city limits due to federal regulations,” read the public notice. “The city has aesthetic requirements in place to ensure the towers are hidden from view or look like natural objects such as pine or palm trees. Chandler also imposes limits on tower height and minimum spacing from nearby homes.”
Atlas Tower has not yet indicated when it intends to start building the tower, or which MNO will be the first to occupy it, according to AZ Family.
