Sweden Cites Russia for Satellite Interference

Repeated interruption of television broadcasts has Sweden accusing Russia of tampering with its satellites. Broadcasts to a Ukrainian audience suggest to Sweden that Russia is behind the communications glitches, reports UNN.ua.

Ulf Kristersson, Sweden’s Prime Minister, described the satellite failures as “serious” and added that the interference “could be seen as part of Russia’s broader hybrid actions against Sweden and other countries.” Kristersson stated that Ukrainian viewers depend on a target satellite owned by a Swedish company. Sweden has indicated that it is looking for a response from Moscow regarding this situation, but thus far, Russia has declined to comment.

Earlier this year, the Swedish Security Service pointed to Russia as the biggest threat to Swedish cyber security. Officials in that country speculate that cyber attacks sustained this past spring probably originated from Russia. The concern prompted Sweden to join NATO, with Head of Security, Charlotte von Essen noting, “We must all learn to live with a serious security situation.”

Other countries, including France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg, share similar concerns about Russian cyber interference and have filed complaints with the International Telecommunication Union, reports UNN.ua.
